MCVC VOLUNTEERS ASSIST
PROJECT HEALING WATERS
A special Armed Forces day holiday of fishing and camaraderie were provided to 38 area veterans Saturday, May 27th, by members of the local chapter of Project Healing Waters on the Manatee River. The day-long activity originated at Palmetto's Bradenton Yacht Club, said Regional Coordinator, Laurence Lurie.
Lurie said he was pleased with the local chapter's first effort at assisting veterans who enjoyed themselves on the river outing. "Special thanks," he said,"to veterans council chairman Don courtney who provided additional manpower which made our debut a huge success." Kirby Stewart American Legion Post 24 provided two Honor Guard volunteers who demonstrated flag etiquette in the proper folding of the U.S. flag at military funeral services. The post also provided a three-man recruitment booth where they provided literature to prospective members interested in Post 24 membership.
VFW Post 10140 presented the colors prior to the introduction of guests and speakers.
A delicious free meal and beverages for guests and volunteers was provided by the Project Healing Waters staff. Members of the Bradenton Mauraders baseball team posed for pictures with the veterans and their bountiful catches. The players then mixed with the guests and signed autographs for all who were interested.
Many thanks to Kirby Stewart American Legion Post 24 and VFW Post 10140 for their valuable assistance in making the first annual Project Healing Waters fly fishing tournament a smashing success.
